5 Upcoming Yoga Events in Ireland
Sometimes it is nice to have a change from your regular yoga class — anything from an afternoon workshop to a weekend-long retreat! I have created a list of 5 different events happening this May across Ireland. There are short, affordable options as well as a couple of investment options for anyone looking for a weekend immersion. Maybe you can give one of them a try next month!
- Right here in our own backyard, on Saturday, May 23rd, there will be a Balance Workshop at Navé Yoga. The workshop, led by Yogacharya Lalit, will focus on standing and arm balancing techniques. It is suitable for beginners or anyone wishing to focus on their balancing skills! Yogacharya Lalit is the director of the Himalaya Yoga Valley Centre in Cork city and has over 20 years experience teaching yoga. The course will take place from 2pm-5pm and costs €25. - The Elbowroom Wellness Centre in Dublin is a great place to check out — they are constantly running workshops and events. On Sunday, May 10th from 12:30-2:30pm they are running a workshop called “Love Yourself Yoga and Meditation.” This workshop will be run by Sophia Pallaro, a qualified yoga teacher with a particular interest in meditation. This workshop is for everyone – beginner to advanced yogis. Time will be spent meditating on the idea of self-compassion and working through a slow flow of poses, as well as some restorative poses to calm the nervous system. This sounds like a really rejuvenating workshop. The 2-hour course costs €22. From Killarney, it is fairly straightforward to take the train to Heuston station and walk directly to the studio. It is only a 10-15 minute walk. Something to consider if you can get away for a day! Click here for more information.
- If you just can’t bear the thought of travelling all the way to Dublin, there will be a restorative yoga workshop a little closer, in Cork city, on Sunday, May 24th from 6-8pm at the Yoga Loft. Restorative workshops are really the best kind of yoga workshop! It is a great way to de-stress, relax the body and relax the mind. Usually in restorative poses, you will spend 5-10 minutes in each pose, supported by props and blankets. It is absolutely suitable for beginners and advanced yogis in need of a little TLC. The course will be taught by Eileen O’Sullivan, a qualified yoga teacher with extensive experience in restorative and theraputic yoga. The cost is €20. Click here for more information.
- If you are interested in a weekend long yoga retreat, the Burren Yoga Centre in Co. Galway is an ever popular destination. From May 15-17th, the centre will be holding a Hatha Yoga and Meditation weekend. Hatha yoga is a gentle style of yoga that is suitable for beginners through to advanced students. The workshop will be led by Gabi Gillessen, a qualified yoga teacher who places particular emphasis on alignment. It is always beneficial for your practice to participate in a workshop with a teacher who places emphasis on alignment. You are sure to come away with better technique! The cost for the weekend is €300, definitely more spendy than the first 3 options but this cost includes all meals, accommodation, yoga classes and a Saturday outing. - This last option is a weekend meditation retreat at the Dzogchen Beara Tibetan Buddhist Retreat Centre on the Beara Peninsula in Co. Cork. Meditation is an integral part of a yoga practice, so this weekend option will give you a chance to really focus on this portion of your practice. From May 15-17th, Andrew Warr will be leading an introduction to meditation workshop entitled “Finding Peace.” Andrew has over 20 years experience traveling the world teaching meditation courses. The workshop costs €215 and includes guided meditations, two lunches and 1 evening meal. Dormitory accommodation is available at an additional cost of €15/night. If this option interests you, but seems cost-prohibitive, the centre also offers daily meditation classes on a donation basis.
